Safety Principles for Theatrical Productions

For amateurs, professionals, in studio or in theatre.

Communicate and consult with all people involved, be continually concerned with safety.
Constantly ask “What could go wrong”, and “How do we prevent it”.
Do Not assume a safe situation will always be safe.
Check it, Watch it, Fix it, Talk it.

CHECK IT
Inspect equipment and maintain it in good working order.
Check that Operating Procedures are suitable for known situations and risks.
Ensure everybody knows their roles and procedures.

WATCH IT
Observe how things work in practice.
What went wrong, nearly went wrong, and what might have gone wrong.
What was done right!
Encourage the reporting of problems, real or imagined.
Listen to differing opinions and experiences.
Learn from all above, investigate everything, and formulate a fix.

FIX IT
Redesign equipment or procedures to eliminate the faults.
Find other ways of doing the job.
Improve training and awareness amongst operators
On guard always. A series of inconsequential faults can accumulate into a major problem, so do not ignore the minors.

TALK IT
All people at all levels must think, talk, and question how to prevent accidents.
Always be on the alert, you cannot predict everything.
Those with experience may prod and poke, but they must also listen.
Have clear policies in place for a “suggestion box” process.
